The Search for the Land

In May of 2002 facing impossible odds, the newly formed Vasantha Sai Charitable Trust sent out a call for help to make Swami’s wish for an Ashram a reality. A letter to friends of Vasantha Sai laid down the challenge. “The land is to be registered before 30 August 2002. Furthermore, Amma wishes to shift to the ashram on her birthday 23 October 2002.  The Trust is committed to raise funds for this project. To achieve this important goal we shall be thankful and grateful for any donation or support now or in the future that you can provide.” Penniless and with only a few months to secure the land and finish construction, accomplishing the task seemed next to impossible.

So it was that with extreme reluctance, Vasantha Sai began the search for the land. Along with SV, head of the trust, they met with various representatives. Everywhere they went, Vasantha Amma could be seen clutching the little maroon bag that held Swami’s padukas tightly to her chest.  They were always there. In this manner, Swami was with her “every step of the way.” After several fruitless attempts in search of a suitable spot, SV phoned to say that two possible sites had been selected.

On a sunny afternoon, she set foot on the future site of Mukthi Nilayam, a 6.5-acre parcel of land dotted with 170 coconut trees near Royapalayam Village.  This is located five kms south of Tirumangalam in Tamil Nadu,  .6 km. walk to National Highway 7. The Trust used the first contribution as a deposit to hold the land.

Vasantha Sai, as is her practice, checked everything every step of the way with Swami; either in meditation or by securing His blessings at the homes of special devotees. Before giving the advance amount for the purchase of the land, a letter was placed for Swami’s permission and blessing. Swami drew the picture of a foot on it. He said, “Give the advance. I have placed my first step on the land.” The payment was made on 22 June 2002 and Bhoomi Pooja was performed on Ashram land eight weeks later.
